Mónica Mendes (DMm Lisbon #2)
The second meeting of the Digital Media Meetups (DMM) took place on the second Wednesday of February (02/13/2019). In this second meeting we had the pleasure of listening to alumni Mónica Mendes talk about her doctoral journey and her current work.
A doctor since 2013, Mónica is assistant professor at the Multimedia Art degree at FBAUL – Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and explore the emotion in real-time interactive systems at the intersection of Art, Science and Technology. She highlighted the changes that her project had until it reached final form: "I submitted two applications to FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) that were refused, but the feedback I got was very important. The feedback led me to direct the investigation in another way." After the exploratory visit to Austin, Mónica chose to do a residency at UCLA Art: "It had a huge impact on me. The people there were directly connected to my research and I presented my project there."
For those who are still starting, and especially for those who are late, Mónica recommends making timelines and update them periodically. She also suggests presenting the research not only in conferences, but whenever you have the opportunity: "At the village hall, in meetups, hacker spaces, exhibitions, in the most varied types of situations. Share your work as much as possible." Documentation of the investigation is also very important: "I had a blog where I was putting the conferences I presented, the residences I participated in, the ones that collaborated with me, etc., and I also created specific websites for each installation I developed during the Ph.D." Finally, Mónica talked about a series of artistic residences that she started doing last January in a farmhouse in Beira Alta and joked: "In the future we can plan writing retreats for students who are trying to finish their doctoral thesis."
